Map and trail profile

Station – lake – cemetery

Popradské pleso (1,494–1,510 m a.s.l.) is the Slovak Morskie Oko without the Palenica asphalt. A hotel on the shore, Ostrva’s wall above it, and next to it the Symbolic Cemetery — wooden crosses for people who stayed in the Tatras.

💡 In a nutshell – Popradské pleso:

  1. For whom: Families, a first day in Slovakia, a rest day before Rysy.
  2. Pushchair: To the hotel yes. To the cemetery no.
  3. Start: TEŽ stop “Popradské Pleso”, not Štrbské Pleso. Parking by the platform.
  4. Dog: On a lead. HZS is billed.

The tiles count the tarn and the cemetery. They do not count Chata pod Rysmi.

Trail description: Blue to the water, yellow to the crosses

Stage 1: From the station to the tarn

Blue on a wide track through forest. After about 1 h 15 min Popradská poľana, a moment later the lake and the mountain hotel.

Stage 2: The Symbolic Cemetery

Yellow 10–15 min under Ostrva. Blue, red and black crosses. The silence is there so you do not wreck it with a loud picnic.

Stage 3: Return

The same way to the station. The red Magistrala leads from here to Štrbské Pleso or toward Kôprovský štít — those are other cards.

Logistics and warnings

  • Parking: At the station, paid, expensive and full in season. The TEŽ from Poprad or Štrbské solves it.
  • Ticket: TANAP. Different from TPN.
  • Winter: The road to the tarn usually stays open. The cemetery is sometimes closed around New Year. Trails above the hotel — from 1 November.
  • Rysy: If the group “pops up to the summit” at 11:00, they will not. Take a separate day and Rysy from Slovakia.

Who is this absolutely NOT for?

Not for someone who wants silence at noon in August — it is one of the easiest goals on the Slovak side, so people are there. Do not push a chair onto the cemetery. Do not confuse this card with a full-day climb of Rysy.

Questions and answers

Can I get here with a pushchair?

Blue to the lake — wide enough. Yellow to the cemetery is steps and roots. The pushchair stays at the hotel.

Is this the same as climbing Rysy?

The same lake, a different card. The tiles end at the cemetery. Slovak Rysy still have five hours up from here.

Is the trail open in winter?

The approach to the tarn yes. The cemetery is sometimes closed seasonally (about 15 Dec–30 Apr). Trails above the hotel — TANAP from 1 November.

Better from the station or from Štrbské?

From the TEŽ stop it is shorter and simpler with a child. From Štrbské on the red Magistrala it is prettier and longer.
