Morskie Oko (1,403 m above sea level) is the most famous, largest and, in the opinion of many, the most beautiful lake in the Tatras. Situated in the Rybi Potok Valley, it is surrounded by the highest peaks in Poland, including Rysy and the distinctive silhouette of Mnich.
It is an iconic place that attracts crowds. To fully appreciate its magic and avoid disappointment, it is worth planning the trip well - the route is technically trivial (asphalt), but long in terms of distance.
Trail description: asphalt or shortcuts?
We start the hike at the car park in Palenica Białczańska. The red trail follows the famous “Oswald Balzer Road”.
- For pushchairs: Families with children stay on the asphalt road the whole time. It is long and somewhat monotonous, but it leads comfortably to the destination.
- For walkers (shortcuts): In several places, the trail cuts across the asphalt bends via stone steps through the forest. It is definitely worth using them - they shorten the distance and make the walk more varied, giving you a break from the crowds on the road.
Halfway along we pass Wodogrzmoty Mickiewicza - the loud cascades on the Roztoka Stream - and about 1.5 km before the destination, the Włosienica clearing (where horse transport ends and a food pavilion stands).
At the lake - what to do?
Once you get there, do not end the trip on the mountain hut terrace!
- Walk around the lake (must do!): The red trail goes all the way around Morskie Oko. It takes about 50 minutes on a flat, stony path. This lets you see the lake from every angle and escape the biggest crowds by the hut.
- Czarny Staw pod Rysami (for those who want more): If you still have the energy, it is worth climbing the red trail for about 30-40 minutes steeply uphill to the second lake. The view of Morskie Oko below is spectacular.
Practical information (very important!)
- Parking (e-ticket): Entry to the car parks at Palenica Białczańska and Łysa Polana is possible ONLY with an online ticket (TPN website). Tickets often sell out several days in advance. There is no possibility to buy a ticket on site!
- Minibus transport: Minibuses marked “Morskie Oko” leave from Zakopane bus station (platform 1). They run very frequently.
- Best time to go: To enjoy the views in peace, be on the trail before 7:00 a.m. or go in the afternoon (in summer the day is long, and after 4:00 p.m. the crowds are already heading back down).
- Winter: In winter, a snow-cleared road also leads to Morskie Oko, but beware of avalanches in the area of Żleb Żandarmerii and Biały Żleb (marked by signs). The lake freezes in winter and you can safely walk on its surface (along the marked route).
