The Biały Valley is the perfect choice for a short but incredibly picturesque trip to the mountains. It is considered the most beautiful of the subalpine valleys in the Polish Tatra Mountains. It owes its name to the sparkling waters of the Biały Potok stream and the light-coloured limestone and dolomite that make up its slopes.

The valley has the character of a karst gorge – it is narrow here, the rock faces are steep, and the vegetation is lush, which gives the place a somewhat mysterious atmosphere.

Route description

We start the hike at the mouth of the valley (about a 15-minute walk from Wielka Krokiew). After passing through the TPN gate, the yellow trail leads us along a comfortable, wide path beside the stream.

  1. Valley Floor: The route crosses the stream several times via wooden bridges. Along the way, we pass numerous rapids, small waterfalls and deep potholes (erosional basins) carved out by the water.
  2. Uranium Adits: In the middle of the valley, on the left-hand side of the trail, you can see a barred opening in the rock. This is a remnant of the top-secret uranium ore exploration carried out by the USSR in the 1950s. At that time, the valley was completely closed to tourists and guarded by the military.
  3. Ascent: In the final stage of the walk, the trail leaves the stream and winds its way up towards the Ścieżka nad Reglami trail.

Although a walk along the valley floor is pleasant, we recommend not returning the same way, but instead completing a loop:

  • Scenic route (Recommended): At the end of the yellow trail, turn right onto the black trail (Path above Reglami) towards Sarnia Skała. After about 20 minutes, you will reach Czerwona Przełęcz. From there, it is worth climbing up to Sarnia Skała (a phenomenal view of Giewont!), and then descend to Dolina Strążyska (Strążyska Valley). This is a classic hike from Zakopane.
  • Walking option: Return down the same route (the easiest option for families with all-terrain pushchairs, although the final stretch is stony).

Practical information

  • Tickets: The valley lies within the Tatra National Park – an entrance fee applies.
  • Suitable for: The route is technically easy. The lower section is accessible to pushchairs; the upper section (the ascent) requires a baby carrier.
  • Parking: The nearest car parks are on Bronisława Czecha Street (below Wielka Krokwia).
  • Climate: Due to the valley’s deep incision into the terrain, it is often cooler and more humid here than in Zakopane – even in summer, it is worth bringing a light jumper.

Pytania i odpowiedzi - Questions and answers

Can I take a pushchair into the Biały Valley?

“Yes, but only up to a certain point. The lower section is gravel and accessible to all-terrain pushchairs. The upper section (the approach to the Ścieżka nad Reglami trail) is too rocky and steep.”

Is there a mountain hut in the valley?

“No, there are no mountain huts or places to eat in the Biały Valley. It’s worth bringing your own food.”

“Can I bring my dog here?”

No, the valley lies within the Tatra National Park, where dogs are not permitted (with the exception of assistance dogs).

Before you head to the mountains

  1. Check the weather forecast, mountain weather changes dynamically
  2. Match the trail to your abilities, don't overestimate your strength
  3. Take appropriate equipment: comfortable hiking boots, rain jacket, warm clothing, map, charged phone, first aid kit, power bank, food and water
  4. Inform someone about your plans, provide the route and expected return time
  5. Save the emergency number GOPR/TOPR, 601 100 300 or 985
