FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions about the Tatras

Not sure whether to pack sneakers or hiking boots? Wondering if your dog can go up Giewont? Or maybe you are looking for the TOPR emergency number? We have collected answers to the questions tourists ask most often.

Logistyka - Logistics, Tickets & Parking

Do I need to buy a TPN entry ticket in advance?

You do not have to, but it is recommended. You can buy tickets at ticket offices at trail entrances (cash/card), but in peak season there are long queues. The most convenient option is to buy an E-ticket via tpn.pl or mobile apps. The price is the same, and you enter without waiting.

What about parking at Morskie Oko (Palenica Białczańska)?

This is the most important rule in the Tatras: You must have an online reservation. There are no ticket booths on site! If you arrive without a ticket purchased online (TPN website), staff will turn you away at the roundabout. In peak season, tickets sell out 2-3 days in advance.

Can you pay by card in mountain huts?

Most of the time yes, but... card terminals rely on mobile signal, which can be unreliable in the mountains (especially in Dolina Pięciu Stawów or Ornak). Always, absolutely always carry cash as backup (and for the apple pie).

Do minibuses run at night in Zakopane?

Do not count on it. Most minibuses going to valley trailheads (Morskie Oko, Dolina Kościeliska) finish service in the evening (around 7-9 PM depending on season). If you come down from the trail very late, you are left with a taxi or your own feet.

Bezpieczeństwo - Safety & Nature

What is the mountain rescue emergency number?

Save it in your phone: 985 or 601 100 300 (TOPR/GOPR).
Definitely install the free "Ratunek" app. It lets you call for help with one tap and automatically sends your exact GPS location to rescuers (drastically speeding up rescue operations).

Do I need insurance when hiking in the Polish Tatras?

In Poland, TOPR rescue operations (including helicopter use) are free of charge. You do not need additional insurance to be rescued.
WARNING: If you set even one foot in Slovakia (e.g. Rysy, Wołowiec, walk to Slovakia), insurance is mandatory. Rescue in Slovakia (Horská záchranná služba) is 100% paid and very expensive.

What should I do if I encounter a bear?

1. Do not run (bears are faster).
2. Do not panic or shout.
3. Calmly back away in the opposite direction.
4. Do not make eye contact (that is a challenge).
Remember: bears generally do not want to attack, they want to be left alone.

Can you swim in Tatra lakes?

Absolutely NOT. It does not matter if it is Morskie Oko or a stream in a valley. This is a strict nature reserve. Swimming destroys the unique ecosystem, and additionally risks a very high fine from the Park Rangers.

Dogs & Drones

Can I enter TPN with a dog?

Generally: NO. Dogs are banned in the Polish Tatras (wildlife protection).
Exception: You can legally bring a dog ONLY to Dolina Chochołowska (up to the mountain hut) and on the Droga pod Reglami path.
If you want to hike with a dog in the mountains, choose the Slovak Tatras (regulations are more relaxed there, although the dog must be on a leash and muzzled).

Can you fly a drone in the Tatras?

NO. Using drones in the National Park is strictly prohibited (disturbing animals, noise). Legal flights are only possible with special permission from TPN management (difficult to obtain). Fines are high and rangers are effective.

Sprzęt - Gear & Preparation

Sneakers or hiking boots?

For valleys (Kościeliska, Strążyska) - sneakers are fine.
For summits (even easier ones like Giewont) - you need shoes with good grip. Flat soles on wet rock guarantee a slip. They do not have to be expensive high boots, but they must grip the terrain.

How to dress in summer?

Layer system. Weather in the mountains changes rapidly.
1. T-shirt (preferably moisture-wicking, not cotton - cotton absorbs sweat and chills).
2. Fleece/Sweatshirt (it is windy on ridges!).
3. Rain jacket (always in your backpack!).

What time should I start hiking?

In summer the rule is: the earlier, the safer.
Storms most often appear in the afternoon (1-3 PM). If you leave at 6 AM, you will reach the summit in good weather and descend safely before the storm. Starting at 11 AM for Rysy or Giewont is a gamble.

Rodzina - Family with Children

Where can I go with a pushchair?

There are quite a few options, but you need to be careful about the surface.
Sure bets: Morskie Oko (asphalt), Dolina Chochołowska (asphalt/gravel - up to halfway), Rusinowa Polana (only from Wierch Poroniec!).
Not recommended: Dolina Białego (too steep for a pushchair in the upper part), trails above the foothills.

From what age can a child go to the mountains?

In a carrier/sling - from infancy (just protect from sun and wind!).
On their own feet - a 4-5 year old can easily do Dolina Strążyska or go up Nosal. The key is patience, frequent breaks and... gummy bears as motivation. 😉

Zima - Winter in the Tatras (A different planet)

Are trails in the Tatras closed in winter?

It depends which side of the border you are on:
In Poland (TPN): Trails are open all year (with small exceptions for nature protection, e.g. Świstówka Roztocka). You can go to Rysy in January, but you do so at your own risk.
In Slovakia (TANAP): STOP. From November 1 to June 15, all trails above mountain huts are closed (seasonal trail closure). You can only reach the huts. Breaking this rule = fine.

What are these "raczki" and do I need them?

Raczki are "chains for boots" (with rubber and small spikes).
For valleys (e.g. Dolina Kościeliska): They are essential in winter. Snow gets packed down and turns into an ice rink. Without raczki you will struggle for your life on a flat path.
For high mountains: Raczki are not enough. There you need professional crampons and an ice axe (and knowledge of how to use them!).

Where to check avalanche risk?

Only on the official TOPR website (topr.pl).
Avalanche 1 and 2: This does not mean "safe". Most accidents happen at level 2.
Avalanche 3: If you are not an expert, stay in valleys or at home.
Avalanche 4 and 5: Do not go to the mountains. Period.

Słowacja - Slovakia vs Poland (Important differences)

Can I pay in zlotys in Slovak mountain huts?

Rarely. The official currency is EURO. Some huts close to the border (e.g. Chata pod Rysami) may accept zlotys "out of courtesy", but the exchange rate will be very unfavorable for you. Bring Euros.

Do I need a passport to cross to the Slovak side via the ridge?

No, we are in the Schengen zone. An ID card in your pocket is enough (but you must have it with you, border guards sometimes patrol border areas).

Can you drink alcohol in Slovak mountain huts?

Yes, and the selection is large (beer, Horec, Tatratea). But remember: Slovak rescuers are strict. If you call for help and you are under the influence of alcohol, insurance may not cover the cost of the rescue operation.

Zdrowie - Health & Fitness

Do trekking poles really help?

Yes! This is not gear only for seniors. Poles reduce load on knees (especially on descents) by several percent. After 8 hours of hiking your joints will thank you. They also help maintain balance on slippery stones.

I have a fear of heights - where should I NOT go?

Avoid trails with "exposure" (drops).
Forbidden list: Orla Perć, Rysy, Świnica, Kościelec, Przełęcz pod Chłopkiem, Rohacze.
Be careful on: Giewont (there is a short moment with a drop), Szpiglasowy Wierch (from Dolina Pięciu Stawów side).
Safe: Czerwone Wierchy (except edges!), Wołowiec, Starorobociański Wierch, Kończysty Wierch.

What is lactic acid buildup and how to avoid it?

It is the moment when muscles refuse to obey ("the power cuts out").
Advice: Do not run at the start. Start slower than you think you can. Drink water in small sips every 15-20 minutes, before you feel thirsty. Eat bars/chocolate before you feel hungry.

Etykieta - Culture & Etiquette (Savoir-vivre)

Should I say hello on the trail?

Yes, it is a beautiful tradition.
Deep in the mountains, where there are fewer people, we greet each other with "Hello" or "Good day".
On "highways" like the road to Morskie Oko, where thousands of people walk, this custom fades (because you would have to say it 100 times a minute). But above mountain huts - it is always worth greeting.

Can I pitch a tent in the wild?

Absolutely NOT.
In the Tatras (PL and SK) camping is strictly prohibited. You risk a fine (even up to 500-1000 PLN) and eviction from the trail. Sleep only in mountain huts.

Can I take a stone as a souvenir?

According to park regulations - you cannot take anything out (rocks, plants, antlers). Leave the mountains in the mountains. Take a photo.

Budżet - Budget (How much does it cost?)

How much does a horse carriage to Morskie Oko cost?

Prices vary and are set by coachmen (often depending on demand). In 2024/2025 it is an expense of about 90-100 PLN per person going up. Going down is cheaper (about 50 PLN). Payment usually only in cash.

Are parking lots free?

In Zakopane and surrounding areas - almost never.
TPN (Morskie Oko): about 35-55 PLN per day (depends on season).
Kiry/Chochołowska (private parking): about 30-40 PLN per day.
City (parking meters): paid by the hour, expensive for all-day parking.

Transport - Transport in Zakopane (Minibuses and traffic)

Can you pay by card in minibuses?

It is a lottery, but usually: NO.
Private minibus drivers (e.g. those going to Morskie Oko or Dolina Kościeliska) prefer cash. You will often hear "I do not have a terminal" or "no signal". Have coins and low-denomination banknotes with you (drivers do not like to give change from 200 PLN).

Where is the bus station in Zakopane?

Currently (as of 2024/25) it is under renovation/reconstruction.
The so-called "temporary station" is located at Rondo Armii Krajowej (right by the PKP train station). This is where most minibuses to the trails start from.

Do Uber/Bolt work in the Tatras?

In Zakopane, taxi apps work (Bolt, Uber, iTaxi), but... their availability varies, and prices "go crazy" in peak season. Often a classic taxi from a stand is more reliable, although more expensive. Remember that Uber will not go where there is a traffic ban (e.g. right to the mountain hut at Morskie Oko).

Higiena - Hygiene & Needs (Taboo topic, but important)

Are there toilets on the trail?

Only at strategic points:
At the entrance: In parking lots and at ticket offices (usually Toi-Toi or paid toilets).
At mountain huts: Every mountain hut has a toilet (often paid for non-guests, about 2-5 PLN).
Between them (e.g. in the middle of Czerwone Wierchy) there are NO toilets.
Advice: Take care of everything at the mountain hut "in advance". If you must in the field - go far from the trail and do not leave tissues on top!

Can you wash your hands/face in mountain streams?

Without soap - yes (for cooling).
With soap/shampoo - NO. Chemicals kill microorganisms in water. Even "bio-soap" is not welcome in the National Park.

Technologia - Technology & Signal

Is there mobile signal in the mountains (LTE/5G)?

It depends on altitude.
On ridges (summits): You usually have excellent signal (often catches Slovak network - beware of roaming if you do not have an EU package!).
In deep valleys: (e.g. bottom of Dolina Chochołowska, Roztoki, middle of Dolina Kościeliska) - often a black hole with no signal ("emergency calls only").

Is a powerbank necessary?

Yes. In the mountains your phone uses battery 2x faster (searching for network + cold + GPS). If your phone dies, you lose your map, camera and ability to call for help.

Przyroda - Nature & Phenomena (Crocuses and Halny)

When do crocuses bloom in Dolina Chochołowska?

There is no single date. Usually it is the turn of March and April.
Everything depends on when the snow melts. The crocus frenzy lasts about 2-3 weeks.
Warning: On crocus weekends tens of thousands of people enter Dolina Chochołowska. Want photos without crowds? Go on Tuesday at 6 AM.

What is "Halny" and is it dangerous?

Halny is a violent, warm foehn wind.
Down in Zakopane it is warm and headaches are common.
Up in the mountains the wind tears your head off (literally - speeds exceed 100-150 km/h).
During halny do not go to the mountains. Trees break like matchsticks, and on ridges the wind can blow you into an abyss.

Jedzenie - Food & Water (Survival)

Can you drink water from streams?

It is risky. Water in the Tatras is chemically clean, but... above you there may be a herd of sheep or chamois. E-coli bacteria do not smell.
Advice: If you must, draw water close to the source (springs). It is safer to use bottles with filters (e.g. Dafi, Water-to-Go) or purification tablets.

Can I get free boiling water at a mountain hut?

According to tradition and PTTK regulations - yes, hikers have the right to boiling water.
However, in some crowded places (e.g. Morskie Oko) a symbolic fee for a cup may be charged if you do not have your own container.
