Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich (The Valley of the Five Polish Lakes) is the very heart of the High Tatras. It is a rugged, rocky and breathtaking place, quite unlike the forested valleys to the west. Here you will find Poland’s highest waterfall, deepest lakes and highest-altitude mountain hut.

The mountain range takes its name from a type of grass (sit skucina) which, in late summer and autumn, turns the slopes a reddish-brown colour. It is at this time of year that the Czerwone Wierchy (Red Peaks) look their most spectacular, although they are a popular destination throughout the season.

Day two of our September holiday in the Tatra Mountains was supposed to be a day of relaxation, but as usual, it didn’t quite work out that way. We ended up at Wielka Krokiew (The Great Krokiew), watched the young ski jumpers training, had a little picnic on Siklawica and visited Sarnia Skała (Sarnia Rock)

Giewont is the symbol of Zakopane and the most popular destination in the Tatra Mountains. The silhouette of the ‘Sleeping Knight’, with a 15-metre-high iron cross at its summit, attracts thousands of tourists.
