Ciemniak (Czerwone Wierchy - Red Peaks)

Ciemniak (2096 m a.s.l.) is the first (or last) peak in the Czerwone Wierchy massif. It is a mountain for those who enjoy endurance challenges. Technically, it is easy here (no chains, wide path), but the total ascent makes Ciemniak one of the toughest hikes in the Polish Tatra Mountains.

Difficulty: medium / difficult (physically demanding)

The mountain range takes its name from a type of grass (sit skucina) which, in late summer and autumn, turns the slopes a reddish-brown colour. It is at this time of year that the Czerwone Wierchy look their most spectacular, although they are a popular destination throughout the season.

Red grasses, no sweltering heat and a sea of mist. September and October are the ‘golden season’ in the Tatra Mountains. But be warned – the days are short and the evenings are freezing.
