The name of the mountain range comes from the grass (sit skucina), which turns the slopes a reddish-brown colour in late summer and autumn. At this time of year, the Czerwone Wierchy look their most spectacular, although they are a popular destination throughout the season.
Route: the classic traverse
The most logical and rewarding option is the west-to-east crossing, i.e. starting in Kiry and descending to Kuźnice (or vice versa).
- Start: Kiry (Kościeliska Valley).
- End: Kuźnice (Zakopane).
- Return to the car: There are minibuses running between these points (with a change in the centre), so the logistics are straightforward.
- The ascent to Ciemniak: This is the most physically demanding part of the hike. The red trail from Kiry climbs steadily for around 3–4 hours. The reward is reaching the first of the four peaks - Ciemniak (2,096 m above sea level).
- Walk along the ridge: From Ciemniak, the high-altitude promenade begins. The trail follows the ridge, passing successive peaks. The terrain is undulating, and the views are breathtaking - the High Tatras on one side, Babia Góra on the other.
- Krzesanica (2,122 m): The highest point of the route. From the Polish side, it is flanked by a gigantic, 200-metre vertical wall. Do not get too close to the edge!
- Descent: From the final peak - Kopa Kondracka - we descend to the pass below Kopa Kondracka, and from there follow the green trail via the mountain hut at Hala Kondratowa to Kuźnice.
Difficulty: fitness over technique
The trail to Czerwone Wierchy is technically easy (no chains, no climbing), but physically demanding.
- The total ascent is almost 1,400 metres - the same as the climb to Rysy from Morskie Oko!
- The route is long and mostly exposed (sun/wind), which increases fatigue.
Safety (important!)
Despite their gentle terrain, the Czerwone Wierchy can be treacherous:
- Fog: In thick fog, it is very difficult to find your bearings on the broad, grassy ridges. Hikers often lose the path and unwittingly head towards the cliffs (particularly in the Krzesanica and Ciemniak areas). Remember: in fog, stick closely to the trail!
- Thunderstorms: The ridge is a prime target for lightning. If a storm is brewing, descend immediately into any of the valleys.
