Map and trail profile

Yellow from Gronik

Giewont from Gronik goes yellow through Mała Łąka Valley, not blue from Kuźnice. The summit (1,894 m) and the chains on the dome are the same. The start is quieter, the car park is different, the queue under the cross is the same.

The tiles and map are the ascent: 6 km, 3 h 31 min, 981 m up. The map does not count the descent.

Trail description

Giewont — the climb to the summit
Giewont — the climb to the summit

Start at Gronik, on the Zakopane–Kiry road. This is not a picnic on the meadow — the Mała Łąka Valley page ends lower down.

  1. To Wielka Polana (yellow, about 1 h): Forest along Małołącki Stream, then the meadow opens. Wielka Turnia ahead, Giewont to the side. Leave the black trail to Przysłop Miętusi here.
  2. To Kondracka Pass (yellow, about 2 h from the meadow): Steep, no chains. In winter this section can be avalanche-prone — check the TOPR bulletin, not an Instagram story.
  3. Kondracka – Wyżnia Kondracka (blue, about 15 min): Here you meet the people from Kuźnice.
  4. Summit push: One-way loop, chains, polished limestone. The dome is described on the Giewont from Kuźnice page.

Panorama

The view from Giewont
The view from Giewont

Zakopane to the north, Czerwone Wierchy and the High Tatras to the south. The view does not depend on where you started. Neither does the queue for the chains.

Warnings

  • Avalanches: Yellow above the meadow in winter is not “easy Giewont from the back”.
  • Storms: The cross attracts lightning. You turn around at the pass; you do not sprint because it is “already close”.
  • Queue: There is no quiet side gate at Wyżnia Kondracka for people from Gronik.
  • Rock: The limestone on the dome slips when dry.

Descent and logistics

Two returns that make sense:

  • Yellow to Gronik — back to the car. A long way down the same trail.
  • Blue to Kuźnice — via Kondratowa. A bus back to Gronik or Zakopane.

The TPN car park at Gronik is smaller than Kiry. Ticket at the trail or online. No hut in the valley. No dogs.

Segment times (ascent)

From the map, no queue:

  • Gronik – Wielka Polana: 1 h
  • Meadow – Kondracka Pass: 2 h
  • Kondracka – Wyżnia Kondracka: 15 min
  • Pass – summit: 15 min

3 h 31 min is walking time up. With the queue and the descent, plan 7–8 hours.

Other approaches

In winter

There is no closure date like Grzybowiec, but yellow above the meadow and the dome are two separate risks. Without microspikes and a willingness to turn around at Kondracka, stay on Wielka Polana.

Who this is not for

Not an add-on after a sandwich on the meadow. Not for a first day on chains. Not with a child who is already sitting down on the yellow trail below the meadow. Not in fog on the dome.

If you only want the valley, stay on the Mała Łąka page. Giewont starts beyond the meadow, yellow uphill.

What to see

  • Wielka Polana Małołącka
  • Kondracka Pass
  • The cross on Giewont
  • Panorama of Zakopane

Questions and answers

How long is Giewont from Gronik?

The climb is 3 h 31 min and 6 km on the map. Count the descent to Gronik or Kuźnice separately. A full day with the queue for the chains is 7–8 hours.

Are there chains in Mała Łąka Valley?

No. The chains start only on the Giewont dome. The valley and Kondracka Pass have none.

Is it quieter than Kuźnice?

At the start, yes. At Wyżnia Kondracka you meet the crowd from Kuźnice and Strążyska. Under the cross the queue is the same.

Where do I park?

The TPN car park at Gronik, on the road from Zakopane to Kiry. Smaller than Kiry. In season, arrive early. Minibus from Zakopane.

Is this trail open in winter?

There is no winter closure like Grzybowiec, but the yellow trail above the meadow can be avalanche-prone, and the dome ices over. Without microspikes and winter experience, stop at Wielka Polana.
