Jaskinia Mylna is the most interesting show cave in the Polish Tatras without artificial lighting or concrete paths. This is not a museum! The temperature here is about +5°C, it is wet, muddy, and the way is indicated only by red triangles painted on the rocks.

💡 In a nutshell – Jaskinia Mylna in a nutshell:

  1. For whom: For people who do not have claustrophobia and are not afraid of getting muddy.
  2. Equipment: A headlamp is mandatory. A phone in your hand won’t work because you’ll have to go on all fours (or crawl).
  3. One-way traffic: Beyond the Pawlikowski Window, the cave is strictly one-way. You enter the darkness and there is no turning back the same way.
  4. Difficulties: Crawling in mud inside, and a steep descent secured with a chain right at the exit.

The name “Mylna” (Misleading) did not come from nowhere - in the tangle of side, blind corridors it is really easy to make a mistake. It is a real adventure for lovers of crawling in the mud!

Trail description: Loop from Polana Pisana

The figures at the top of the page show the time and distance for the cave itself, starting and finishing at Polana Pisana (in the Kościeliska Valley). To get here, you first have to walk from Kiry (about 1 h).

Stage 1: Approach to the opening

From Polana Pisana we turn left onto the red trail.

  • The path climbs steeply up over rocks. After about 15 minutes we reach the entrance opening.

Stage 2: Pawlikowski Window

Immediately after entering the cave we reach the so-called Pawlikowski Windows.

  • These are natural openings in the rock through which daylight enters, offering a beautiful view of Bystra and Błyszcz.
  • Warning: This is the last place from which you can easily turn back. If you suffer from claustrophobia, end your trip here!

Stage 3: The Labyrinth (One-way only!)

The further part of the cave is strictly one-way.

  • We enter total darkness. We pass through the Great Chamber, and then the narrow squeezes begin.
  • In places you have to go on all fours or even crawl in the mud. Strictly follow the red triangles! Side corridors are not the trail.
  • About 300 metres out of over 1,600 metres of the entire cave system have been made available for visiting.

Stage 4: Exit and chain

We exit the cave through a different opening.

  • The descent from the exit opening is secured with a chain. The rock here can be very slippery.
  • After descending from the rocks, a short path brings us back to the floor of the Kościeliska Valley.

Logistics and warnings

  • Equipment is essential: A headlamp is mandatory. A phone torch is a bad idea - in the cave you will need both hands for crawling and leaning against the rocks.
  • Clothing: Be prepared to come out of the cave dirty. The narrow corridors force you to rub against wet, muddy walls. In the narrowest places you have to push your backpack in front of you.
  • One-way: Once you enter deep into the labyrinth, there is no turning back. The corridors are too narrow to pass people coming from the opposite direction.

Who is this absolutely NOT for?

Do not enter here with a pushchair or a dog. Do not enter if you suffer from claustrophobia or are afraid of getting dirty. If you want to see a cave, but without crawling in the mud, choose the neighbouring Jaskinia Raptawicka (requires climbing a ladder). If you are only interested in a walk, stay on the main trail in the Kościeliska Valley.

Numerous parking lots line the road in Kiry. On sunny weekend mornings they fill up after 8:30 AM. Some accept cards, but cash is recommended.

Buses from Main Station towards Kościelisko & Kiry

Route & bus stop: Zakopane Main Station ➔ Aleje 3 Maja ➔ Kościelisko ➔ Kiry (bus stop right by TPN gate)

Fare: ~8–10 PLN one-way

Buses marked „Kiry / Dolina Kościeliska” depart every 10–15 minutes.

Questions

Is the 57 min from Kiry?

No. 57 min and 1 km are from the turn-off at Polana Pisana. From Kiry the valley plus the cave is about 3 h. The valley floor has its own page.

Do I have to go through the labyrinth?

No. To the Pawlikowski Window and back through the same opening. The dark section is one-way — once you go in, you do not turn around under other people.

Are there chains? Is a phone enough?

There is a chain on the descent from the exit opening. Inside it is dark. Headlamp. A phone occupies the hands you need for crawling.

Can I bring a dog or a pushchair?

No. TPN. The pushchair stays on the valley floor.

Start: Polana Pisana (Kościeliska Valley), finish in the same place. The whole route is 1 km and takes 57 min of walking without breaks, with about 123 m of ascent. Add time for rests and photos.
