Ornak stands at 1,854 m above sea level. It is a powerful massif in the Western Tatras, often confused with the mountain hut of the same name (which lies at its foot). Crossing the Ornak ridge is one of the most pleasant scenic hikes in this part of the mountains.

The trail runs entirely through open terrain, offering spectacular views of the highest peaks of the Western Tatras, while remaining free of technical difficulties.

Trail description: the loop through Pyszniańska Valley

The most interesting variant is to make a loop from Kościeliska Valley.

  1. Approach: From Kiry we walk along Kościeliska Valley to the mountain hut, and then a bit farther to the fork. We turn onto the yellow trail to Iwaniacka Pass.
    • The ascent to the pass is rather tiring (stone steps in the forest), but it is the hardest fitness section of the hike.
  2. Ornak Ridge (green trail): At the pass we enter the ridge proper. The path leads through dwarf pine and grasses, crossing the successive humps of the massif (Suchy Wierch, Kotłowa Czuba, Zadni Ornak).
    • This is where the magic happens: on the right we are accompanied by the huge wall of Kominiarski Wierch, and in front of us rises the monumental pyramid of Starorobociański Wierch.
  3. Descent (Siwa Pass): The ridge ends at Siwa Pass. From there we descend via the black trail into Pyszniańska Valley.
    • This is a strict nature reserve. The valley is wild, empty and covered by old forest (you can often spot bear tracks here).
  4. Return: The black trail leads us back to the mountain hut on Hala Ornak (time for apple pie!), from where we return to Kiry.

Why is it worth it?

  • Perspective: From Ornak, Starorobociański Wierch and Bystra look the most impressive. It is the best place to feel the scale of the Western Tatras without climbing above 2,000 metres.
  • Kominiarski Wierch: This characteristic, flat mountain (off limits to tourists) is best seen from here. It looks like a stone fortress.
  • Peace: Most hikers end the trip at the mountain hut. On the Ornak ridge it is usually quieter than on the Czerwone Wierchy.

Practical information

  • Nature protection: The descent through Pyszniańska Valley passes through a wildlife nursery. Keep quiet and do not leave the trail!
  • Who is it for: The hike is long (over 19 km), but without exposure. Ideal for people with average fitness who want to see something more than just valleys.
  • Direction: We recommend ascending from Iwaniacka Pass (yellow) and descending into Pyszniańska (black). The approach from Pyszniańska is very long and monotonous, so it is better left for the descent.

Pytania i odpowiedzi - Questions and answers

Is Ornak the same as the mountain hut?

No! The "Na Hali Ornak" mountain hut is in the valley. The summit (or rather the ridge) of Ornak rises several hundred metres higher. Going up the ridge is a proper mountain hike.

Before you head to the mountains

  1. Check the weather forecast, mountain weather changes dynamically
  2. Match the trail to your abilities, don't overestimate your strength
  3. Take appropriate equipment: comfortable hiking boots, rain jacket, warm clothing, map, charged phone, first aid kit, power bank, food and water
  4. Inform someone about your plans, provide the route and expected return time
  5. Save the emergency number GOPR/TOPR, 601 100 300 or 985
  6. Buy a ticket to the Tatra National Park
