Lomnica stands at 2,634 m above sea level. It is the proud “Queen of the Tatras”. Its silhouette is so sharp that for centuries it was believed to be the highest peak in the Tatras (only precise measurements dethroned it in favour of Gerlach).

Today it is an iconic place for two reasons:

  1. You can reach it by cable car without breaking a sweat.
  2. The views from the summit are absolutely unlike anything else - the drops are vertical, and the world lies at your feet.

Variant 1: Cable car ascent (logistics mission)

Getting to Lomnica is a complex operation that has to be planned in advance. It happens in three stages:

  1. Bottom: Tatranská Lomnica -> Start (transfer).
  2. Middle: Start -> Skalnaté pleso. Here you get off and walk to a separate building.
  3. Top: Skalnaté pleso -> Lomnica. This is the famous red hanging gondola section that overcomes 855 metres of elevation gain without any support!

Rules of the game (important!):

  • Tickets: Tickets for the red cable car to the summit must be bought online (GOPASS) well in advance (in season, even 1-2 weeks earlier!). The ticket offices on site are usually empty because everything is sold out.
  • Price: This is the most expensive attraction in the Tatras. The ride costs from 60 up to even 100 EUR per person (prices are dynamic and depend on demand).
  • Time: Time on the summit is limited! You get exactly 50 minutes. After that, a whistle calls you back to the cabin. You cannot stay longer (unless you book a night in the summit apartment).

On the summit: 50 minutes in the clouds

What can you do in those 50 minutes?

  • The hanging terrace: An openwork walkway suspended over a vertical wall. Under your feet there are hundreds of metres of emptiness. It is a test for people afraid of heights.
  • Dedo café: You can drink coffee in the highest venue in the Slovak Tatras (prices match the altitude).
  • Views: You can see everything from the Polish lowlands, through the whole High Tatras, all the way to Hungary.

Variant 2: On foot (guide only)

There is no tourist trail leading to Lomnica.

  • Walking is possible only with a licensed high-mountain guide (just like on Gerlach).
  • The route (the so-called Jordan Path) is harder than climbing Gerlach. It requires climbing, use of rungs and chains in significant exposure. It is an adventure for advanced hikers.

Variant 3: Walk to Skalnaté pleso

If you fail to buy a ticket for the summit, it is still worth taking the cable car (or hiking up the green trail, about 3 hours) at least to the transfer station - Skalnaté pleso.

  • It is a beautiful mountain lake at the foot of Lomnica.
  • From here you can walk the Tatra Main Trail (red trail) towards Zamkovský chata and the Waterfalls of the Cold Creek.

Practical information

  • Weather: The summit cable car is very sensitive to wind. If it blows too strongly, services are cancelled (the money returns to your Gopass account).
  • Dogs: You can take a dog only to Skalnaté pleso. Dogs are not allowed on the red gondola to the summit.
  • Parking: In Tatranská Lomnica there are huge parking lots (often free or included in the ticket price, depending on the season).

Pytania i odpowiedzi - Questions and answers

Can you walk up on foot?

Only with a guide (a difficult climbing route).

How do I buy a cable car ticket?

Tickets to the summit have to be bought online (Gopass) well in advance. On site they are usually sold out.

Before you head to the mountains

  1. Check the weather forecast, mountain weather changes dynamically
  2. Match the trail to your abilities, don't overestimate your strength
  3. Take appropriate equipment: comfortable hiking boots, rain jacket, warm clothing, map, charged phone, first aid kit, power bank, food and water
  4. Inform someone about your plans, provide the route and expected return time
  5. Save the emergency number GOPR/TOPR, 601 100 300 or 985
  6. Buy a ticket to the Tatra National Park
