Skrajne Solisko stands at 2,117 m above sea level. It is a summit that dominates Štrbské Pleso. From below it looks like a steep pyramid, but in reality it is very welcoming to hikers.

It is the perfect place to take someone who is just starting their High Tatras adventure. With minimal effort (thanks to the cable car) you can stand above 2,000 metres and see a breathtaking panorama.

Variant 1: for the comfortable (cable car + summit)

This is the most popular option.

  1. Ascent: From Štrbské Pleso we take the 4-person chairlift up to Chata pod Soliskom (1,840 m a.s.l.). The ride takes a few minutes and lets you admire the ski jumps and the lake from above.
  2. Summit push (red trail): From the mountain hut to the summit it takes about 45-60 minutes.
    • Note: This is not a walk in the park! The path climbs very steeply over stones and zigzags.
    • Even though it is short, you can get out of breath. There are no precipices or chains here.
  3. Return: We descend to the mountain hut for lunch and take the cable car back down. The whole trip takes about 2-3 hours.

Variant 2: for sportspeople (on foot from below)

If you want to earn the mountain honestly from zero, you start on the blue trail along the ski route.

  • The ascent is rather monotonous and steep (you walk in open terrain under the lift).
  • It is a good fitness workout, but the views are no different from the cable car ascent.

Panorama: in the shadow of Krywań

The view from Skrajne Solisko is brilliant.

  • Below: Štrbské Pleso looks like a small, shining coin.
  • West: The huge mass of Krywań is best seen from here in the entire Tatras. You can count the hikers on its summit.
  • In the distance: Views of Furkotská Valley and the dark walls of Szatan.

Chata pod Soliskom

This is one of the youngest mountain huts in the Tatras. Located right by the upper cable car station, it offers a large sunny terrace. Prices are “high-mountain” prices, but the view with your coffee is included.

Practical information

  • Insurance: You are in Slovakia - buy a policy!
  • Seasonality:
    • The mountain hut and cable car operate all year round.
    • The red trail (from the hut to the summit) is CLOSED IN WINTER (1.11 - 15.06). In winter Solisko is a popular ski resort.
  • Dogs: Yes! You can take a dog to this summit (and on the cable car!) - leash and muzzle are mandatory. That is rare in the High Tatras.

Pytania i odpowiedzi - Questions and answers

Is the climb to the summit difficult?

Technically - no (no chains, wide path). Fitness-wise - it is short but intense (very steep). Older people or those without fitness may need frequent breaks.

Can I take a pushchair up?

You can take a folded pushchair up the cable car to the mountain hut (staff help). However, you cannot take it all the way to the summit (stones, steepness). You can leave the pushchair on the viewing terrace by the hut.

How much does the cable car cost?

Prices are dynamic (Gopass system), but a return ticket usually costs around EUR 15-20.

Is the summit safe for children?

Yes, as long as you keep an eye on them on the trail (stones). It is a great objective for a 6-7 year olds first "serious" summit.

Before you head to the mountains

  1. Check the weather forecast, mountain weather changes dynamically
  2. Match the trail to your abilities, don't overestimate your strength
  3. Take appropriate equipment: comfortable hiking boots, rain jacket, warm clothing, map, charged phone, first aid kit, power bank, food and water
  4. Inform someone about your plans, provide the route and expected return time
  5. Save the emergency number GOPR/TOPR, 601 100 300 or 985
  6. Buy a ticket to the Tatra National Park
