Dolina Chochołowska (The Chochołowska Valley) is the largest and longest valley in the Polish Tatra Mountains, situated on the western edge of the Tatra National Park. It is a unique place in many respects, offering gentle trails that are ideal for long walks.

Why is it worth visiting the Chochołowska Valley?

The valley is famous above all for its spring crocus blooms, when Chochołowska Glade is covered in a purple carpet of flowers. It is also one of the few valleys in the Tatra Mountains where dogs are allowed (on a lead) and which can be explored by bike.

Route

The hike begins at Siwa Polana. The green trail follows a wide path for about 7 kilometres to the mountain hut. The route is gentle, making it a popular choice for families with children. Along the way, we pass the valley’s characteristic narrowings, known as the ‘gates’: the Lower and Upper Chochołowska Gates.

The Chochołowska Mountain Hut and Glade

At the end of the valley lies the PTTK Mountain Hut on Chochołowska Glade – the largest mountain hut in the Polish Tatra Mountains. It is well worth trying the famous ‘Chochołowski Dessert’ here. The glade itself is one of the most expansive in the Tatras, featuring preserved historic shepherds’ buildings and the charming Chapel of St John the Baptist.

Alternatives for walkers

If you don’t want to cover the entire route on foot, you can make use of:

  • The “Rakoń” tourist cable car (runs to Polana Huciska).
  • Bike hire (available in season).
  • Horse-drawn carriages.
