Wołowiec stands at 2,064 m above sea level. It is the “Guardian of the Chochołów Valley”. It is one of the safest 2,000-metre peaks in the Tatras, ideal for your first higher-mountain adventure.
Its massive silhouette closes the valley from the south. The summit lies on the main ridge of the Tatras, on the Polish-Slovak border, and is famous for being windy almost all the time.
Trail description: The finale of the “trilogy”
The best way to climb Wołowiec is to combine it with Grześ and Rakoń, creating a large, logical loop.
- Approach: We pass Grześ and Długi Upłaz, reaching Rakoń (described in previous trails).
- Ascent to the summit: From Rakoń, the blue trail leads to Wołowiec. It is about 35-40 minutes of climbing. It is steep, but the path is wide and comfortable.
- On the way up, make sure to look around - the slopes of Wołowiec are a favourite pasture for chamois. Entire herds often graze here, completely ignoring the hikers.
- Summit: The top is flat and spacious. The view of the Slovak Roháče (Ostry and Płaczliwy) is the most impressive from here - those rocky “teeth” seem close enough to touch, contrasting with the gentle slopes on the Polish side.
Return: the green trail (descent)
Do not return to Rakoń! Descend via the green trail directly to Chochołów Valley.
- The beginning of the descent is steep and runs through rock scree.
- Farther on, the trail enters dwarf pine and leads comfortably through a gorge between Rakoń and Bobrowiec.
- It is the quickest way back to the mountain hut.
Practical information
- First 2,000-metre peak: If you dream of crossing the magical 2,000-metre threshold but are afraid of chains and precipices, choose Wołowiec. There are no technical difficulties here.
- Fitness: Even without technical problems, the 23 km distance (from car park to car park) is a marathon. Your legs will feel it at the end.
- Bike: Once again, we remind you - in Chochołów Valley a bike is a lifesaver. Riding back down the windy valley after reaching Wołowiec is pure euphoria.
