Kończysty Wierch stands at 2,002 m above sea level. It is the perfect objective for those who want to reach an “honourable 2,000 metres” in peace and quiet. Although it is lower than its neighbours (Starorobociański and Jarząbczy), its central position means the views from here are even better - because you can see those higher peaks in full glory.
It is a border, junction-like summit. This is where the main ridge of the Tatras meets the side ridge coming from Trzydniowiański Wierch.
Trail description: the “Via Czubik” variant
The most interesting route to Kończysty Wierch leads through Trzydniowiański Wierch.
- Jarząbcza Valley: From the mountain hut on Chochołów Glade (you can take the Rakoń tourist train or a bike) we follow the red trail (the Papal Trail) along the floor of Jarząbcza Valley.
- Ascent (red trail): The trail turns into the forest and climbs the Krowiniec ridge. The ascent is steep, but effective - we gain height quickly.
- Trzydniowiański Wierch: After leaving the forest we reach the first summit. From there we continue along the green trail towards the border.
- Czubik: On the way we pass the scenic hump called Czubik. The trail rises and falls a little, offering brilliant views on both sides.
- Finale: The final ascent to Kończysty Wierch is wide and safe. We stand on the Polish-Slovak border.
Panorama: right in the middle of everything
Kończysty Wierch is the best “viewing box” for the giants of the Western Tatras.
- Starorobociański Wierch: From here it looks like a huge dark pyramid. We are so close that you can see hikers on its summit.
- Jarząbczy Wierch and Jakubina: On the right side rise cliffs dropping into the Slovak Raczkowa Valley.
- Wołowiec and the Roháče: In the distance you can see the jagged Roháče ridge.
Where next? (the great junction)
Once you are on Kończysty, you have a strategic choice:
- Left (red): To Starorobociański Wierch (about 35 min). This is for ambitious hikers who want the highest peak in the area.
- Right (red): To Jarząbczy Wierch (about 20 min). A short climb to a scenic summit.
- Down (green): Return the same way via Trzydniowiański Wierch.
Practical information
- Bike: The standard Chochołów Valley tip: take a bike for the approach to the mountain hut. Your feet will thank you.
- Wind: Kończysty Wierch is fully exposed. It is almost always windy on the ridge, and the wind can be icy even in summer.
- Few crowds: This is a summit visited less often than Wołowiec or the Czerwone Wierchy. If you are looking for solitude on the trail, this is a good choice.
