Bystra stands at 2,248 m above sea level. It is the undisputed queen of the Western Tatras. It is the highest peak in this range on both sides of the border. Although it lies entirely within Slovakia, its summit is just a 15-minute walk from the Polish border (from the summit of Błyszcz).
This is a challenge for hikers with iron stamina. Technically, the route is easy (no chains, no precipices), but the distance and total ascent (over 1,600 metres!) make this one of the toughest day trips starting from the Polish valleys.
Route: the great loop via Ornak
To reach Bystra from Poland, we must first ascend the main ridge of the Tatra Mountains. The most scenic route leads through the Ornak massif.
- Stage 1: Warm-up (Kiry -> Iwaniacka Pass):
- We start in Kiry, walk a short distance through Kościeliska Valley, and then turn off onto the yellow trail towards Iwaniacka Pass. It is a gruelling climb through the forest, but a necessary one.
- Stage 2: The Ornak Ridge (a feast for the eyes):
- From the pass, we join the green trail leading along the Ornak ridge.
- It is an incredible walk - we follow the broad ridge, with Czerwone Wierchy to our left and Starorobociański Wierch to our right. The terrain is open, grassy and spacious.
- Stage 3: Błyszcz (border):
- From Siwa Pass, a very steep, scree-covered ascent to Błyszcz (2,159 m a.s.l.) awaits us.
- Błyszcz is a border peak that acts as a keystone for Bystra. Many hikers stop here, but that is a mistake - the destination is right next door!
- Stage 4: Ascent of Bystra (Slovakia):
- From Błyszcz, we turn onto the blue trail (south).
- The descent to a small pass and the ascent to the summit of Bystra takes only about 15 minutes.
Panorama: there is only one queen
The view from Bystra is probably the best in the entire Western Tatras.
- East: The High Tatras (Świnica, Rysy, Krywań) are clearly visible, but from a rare westerly perspective.
- West: A sea of peaks in the Western Tatras stretching all the way to the Roháče.
- South: Deep, green Slovak valleys (Raczkowa, Bystra) sloping down towards the Liptov Basin.
- Nature: Bystra is famous for its huge herds of chamois. You can often spot herds of 20–30 animals grazing right by the trail.
Practical information
- Insurance: When you climb Bystra, you cross the border into Slovakia. Even though it is only 15 minutes from Poland, in the event of an accident the Horská Služba will intervene (and charge you!). Make sure you have insurance.
- Fitness: This is a proper hike. 24 km and 1,650 m of ascent are comparable to climbing Rysy from Morskie Oko. Set off at dawn (6:00 a.m. is the absolute minimum).
- Return: The quickest way back from Błyszcz is via the same route through Siwa Pass, then along the black trail through Pyszniańska Valley to the Hala Ornak mountain hut and on to Kiry.
