Świnica stands at 2,301 m above sea level. It is the “Queen” of this part of the Tatras. Its distinctive two-summit massif dominates Hala Gąsienicowa and the Valley of Five Lakes. Thanks to its central location (at the junction of three main ridges), it offers a panorama that, according to many, is even better than the one from Rysy.
This is a summit that gives you the adrenaline of real high-mountain climbing while still being possible as a one-day hike.
Trail description: the “Świnica loop”
The most beautiful option is the ridge traverse.
- Getting to the start: You can walk up to Kasprowy Wierch (green trail, about 2.5 h) or take the cable car (saving energy for the main part).
- Kasprowy -> Świnicka Pass: From Kasprowy we head off on the red trail. The beginning feels like a walk, but the views of Cicha Valley (Slovakia) are stunning.
- Summit push (chains): Difficulties begin at Świnicka Pass. The trail enters the rock. Chains appear, and the exposure grows under your feet. A key spot is the so-called “Wrótka” - a narrow rock notch where queues often form.
- Summit: The summit is fairly spacious, but airy. The view of nearby Kościelec and Kozi Wierch is iconic.
Warning: this is not a flip-flop walk
The proximity of the cable car means that casual tourists often end up on Świnica. Remember:
- Weather: Świnica attracts storms. If you see storm clouds over the Western Tatras - get out. You are on metal chains at 2,300 metres!
- Difficulty: This is a full-fledged High Tatras trail. If the sight of a drop paralyses you or you cannot pull yourself up on the chains, end the hike at Kasprowy Wierch or Beskid.
- Crowds: In season, queues form on the chains. Passing each other in narrow places can be stressful.
