Kopa Kondracka stands at 2,005 m above sea level. It is the most popular summit in the Czerwone Wierchy massif. Why? Because it is relatively easy to reach from Zakopane, safe (dome-shaped, broad slopes) and offers a panorama that knocks you off your feet.

This is where beginner hikers most often achieve their record height. If you dream of a “two” at the beginning of the altimeter, but are afraid of precipices, Kopa Kondracka is the perfect choice.

Trail description: the “Goryczkowa loop”

To make the hike interesting and scenic, we recommend a loop through two different valleys. Direction: Up through Hala Kondratowa, down through Goryczkowa.

  1. Stage 1: The classic approach to the hut (blue trail): From Kuźnice we walk on a cobbled road to Kalatówki, and then on a forest path to Hala Kondratowa.
    • Right behind the mountain hut begins the “wall of tears” - a steep zigzag climb to Kondracka Pass. This is the most tiring part of the hike.
  2. Stage 2: Fork at the pass: At Kondracka Pass the crowds turn right towards Giewont. You go left (yellow trail).
    • You enter a different world. The crowd disappears and space opens up.
    • The ascent to the summit of Kopa is steep, stony, but short (about 45 minutes).
  3. Stage 3: Summit: You are at 2,005 metres! The summit is wide and flat, ideal for a long break.
    • View: Giewont looks completely different from here - not like the “Sleeping Knight”, but like a small rock far below. You can see the huge cliffs of Małołączniak and the entire High Tatras.
  4. Stage 4: Descent through the “Pig Valley” (green trail): From the summit we descend eastwards to Przełęcz pod Kopą Kondracką, and from there down the green trail into Goryczkowa Valley.
    • This is the so-called “Pig Valley” (historical name). The trail is very scenic, running among dwarf pine and grasses, with a view of Kasprowy Wierch.
    • In the lower section it joins the ski run and takes us back to Kuźnice.

Why the loop?

Returning the same way (via Hala Kondratowa) means squeezing through crowds heading for Giewont. The descent through Goryczkowa Valley is much quieter, wilder and lets you see completely different landscapes (the Kasprowy area).

Practical information

  • Safety: Kopa Kondracka is technically easy (no chains), but it is very treacherous in fog. On the broad ridges it is easy to lose the trail and end up on the Slovak side or on the cliffs.
  • Wind: It is almost always windy on the ridge. Even on a hot day the felt temperature on the summit can be 10 degrees lower than in Zakopane. Bring a jacket!
  • Winter: Kopa is a popular ski touring objective, but the descent into Goryczkowa Valley (green trail) is often avalanche-prone in winter! In snowy conditions it is safer to return via Hala Kondratowa.
