Wrota Chałubińskiego stands at 2,022 m above sea level. It is a narrow pass in the main ridge of the Tatras, separating Mnich from Cubryna. It is a place forgotten by the crowds, but beloved by solitude seekers and history buffs.
The trail here was opened in the 19th century, but it has never gained the popularity of the neighbouring Morskie Oko or Czarny Staw pod Rysami. And that is its greatest charm.
Trail description: deep into the wilderness
The route is technically easy (no chains, no exposure), but very demanding physically - a total of over 20 kilometres and nearly 1,300 metres of ascent.
- Approach (to Morskie Oko): The first hour is a classic approach on asphalt to Morskie Oko.
- Behind the hut: Behind the mountain hut at Morskie Oko, the red trail leads along the eastern shore of the lake. Here the crowds thin out. The trail becomes narrower and rockier.
- The valley behind Mnich: The trail climbs into a raw, stony cirque tucked between the walls of Mnich and Cubryna. There is no vegetation here, only boulders, scree and silence. It is a landscape straight out of a documentary about the moon.
- Wrota Chałubińskiego: The pass itself is a narrow notch in the ridge. Standing here, you have Poland beneath your feet on one side, and Slovakia on the other. From the Slovak side, the view opens onto the blue Ciemnosmreczyńskie Lakes (inaccessible to tourists).
Why is it worth it?
- Solitude: Even in the height of summer, you can have the entire trail to yourself here.
- Wildness: The area is raw, with no artificial aids or “civilisation”. This is what the entire High Tatras looked like before tourism.
- Close-up of Mnich: You walk literally at the foot of the legendary pyramid of Mnich. From here, the wall looks even more vertical and imposing.
Practical information
- Fitness: This is a very long and exhausting route. People who struggle with Morskie Oko will find this route too much. We recommend it only for fit hikers.
- Water: Take at least 2-3 litres. After Morskie Oko, there are no more sources.
- Historical note: The trail was established in the 19th century and is named after Tytus Chałubiński - a legendary Tatra physician and explorer, co-founder of the Tatra Society (TT).
