Solo in the Tatras: Madness, courage, or the best decision you'll ever make?
Sound familiar? For a month you’ve been planning an epic Tatra getaway. Two days before you leave, Marek messages that his sinuses are acting up and Kasia that her boss wouldn’t approve the leave. You’re on your own. Now what — cancel the hostel and binge Netflix for the weekend, or pack your rucksack and go solo?
Most people freak out at the thought of hiking alone. They worry they’ll twist an ankle where no one will find them, or die of boredom. The truth is, solo hiking is hands down the best way to reset your head. But it comes with iron rules.
Why solo hiking is great
Whenever you hike with someone, you compromise. You’re too slow because your partner’s gasping. Or you’re too fast, chasing someone with calves of steel until you collapse. You stop for shots you don’t want, and chat when all you crave is silence.
When you hike alone:
- You call the shots. Fancy sitting on a rock and staring at Morskie Oko for an hour? Do it. Want to bail halfway down? Bail — no apologies to anyone.
- You hear the mountains. It sounds clichéd, but in a group you talk over the landscape. Alone, you finally notice the wind, the crunch of boots, your own thoughts. The best therapy there is — and free.
But is it safe?! (TOPR’s stats don’t lie)
Here’s the hard part. Statistically, TOPR rescuers fly out surprisingly often for so-called ‘solo hikers’. Why? Because on your own you’re missing a voice of reason. When you’re two and the weather turns, someone usually says, ‘Listen, this is turning nasty, let’s turn back.’ Alone, ‘achievement mode’ kicks in: I’ve already come this far, I can finish. Sometimes you really can’t.
Four iron rules for solo hikers:
- Leave a trail. Never head out without telling someone down in the valleys. Send a text to your mum, partner, or mate: ‘I’m going to Kościelec. Back around 16:00 on the green trail to Kuźnice. If I’m not in touch by 18:00, call TOPR.’ That literally saves lives.
- The Ratunek app is your virtual buddy. Keep it on your phone and carry a charged power bank. Non-negotiable.
- Be your own voice of reason. If something on the trail ‘doesn’t feel right’ — you’re scared of a chain section, there’s an ugly cloud building, or you’re running on empty — turn back. The mountains don’t run a complaints desk.
- Stick to ground you know. Save exploring tough, unfamiliar routes (like Orla Perć or Żleb Kulczyńskiego) for when you’re out with an experienced partner.
Where to go on your first solo trip? (Our picks)
For your first outing alone, pick trails where… you aren’t entirely alone anyway. Sounds odd, but knowing someone passes every ten minutes feels surprisingly safe.
- Warm-up: Sarnia Skała or Nosal. Short, safe, civilisation-adjacent, with views and satisfaction basically guaranteed.
- A bolder test: Czerwone Wierchy. Long and taxing on stamina, yet technically forgiving (no voids beside the path, no chains). The ridge almost always has other hikers, so if you roll an ankle, help won’t be far.
- Western Tatras: Grześ and Rakoń. Wide, scenic ridges that are hard to get lost on, with effectively zero risk of getting ‘stuck’ on rock.
Solo hiking is something everyone should try at least once. It shows you where your limits are and sends your confidence sky high. Pack your bag, tuck in your favourite chocolate bar, and go. You’ve got the best company there is — your own.
