Zelené kežmarské pleso (1,545 m, hut 1,551 m a.s.l.) is one of the clearest lakes on the Slovak side. Chata pri Zelenom plese stands on the shore. Lomnický štít hangs above it. The Palenica crowd does not reach here.

💡 In a nutshell – Zelené pleso:

  1. For whom: A long, quiet day without chains. Fitness for 15 km, not for a ferrata.
  2. Start: Biela voda, yellow all the way to the hut door.
  3. Winter: To the hut usually yes. To Jahňací štít from 1 Nov to 31 May no.
  4. Dog: Prohibited above the shelter at Šalviový prameň (TANAP regulations). You cannot reach the hut with a dog. HZS mountain rescue insurance required.

Trail description: Yellow to turquoise water

Stage 1: Forest and Šalviový prameň

From the SAD stop at Biela voda, yellow into Dolina Kežmarskej Bielej vody. After 1 h 20 min a spring and a shelter. This is not yet the tarn.

Stage 2: Meadows and the step

Nižná Folvarská, stones, the last 300 m of ascent. After about 3 h you stand at the hut.

Stage 3: The tarn and the return

The water is green when the sun hits it. Eat in the hut, not on the shore in the dwarf pine. Return the same way unless you take the Veľké Biele pleso variant.

Logistics and warnings

  • Access: Tatranská Lomnica → Tatranské Matliare / Biela voda. SAD bus or a car.
  • Ticket: TANAP, not TPN. A different booth, a different sum.
  • Insurance: Horská služba is billed.
  • Dog: Strictly prohibited above Šalviový prameň (TANAP regulations). Dogs on a leash are only permitted up to the trail shelter at the spring.
  • Continuation: From the hut the red magistrala toward Široké sedlo or yellow to Jahňací.

Who is this absolutely NOT for?

Not a pushchair. Not a “quick tarn” like Strążyska. If you want chains the same day, that is already Jahňací — a separate, hard card. If you want a shorter Slovak lake, take Popradské pleso.

Questions and answers

Is 6 h 14 min one way?

No. The tiles count there and back from Biela voda. One way the map gives 3 h 07 min and 7.7 km.

Is the trail closed in winter?

The approach to the hut usually stays open. Jahňací štít and the ridge above the tarn close under TANAP from 1 November to 31 May.

Are there chains?

No. Forest, stones, steps. Chains start when you continue to Jahňací.

Can I bring a dog to Zelené pleso?

Not to the mountain hut. Under TANAP regulations, dogs on a lead are permitted along the yellow trail only as far as the shelter at Šalviový prameň. Beyond that point (into Dolina Zeleného plesa), dogs are strictly prohibited.
